Welcome! I am Ben Francis-Woodward BSc (hons) FdFSc course coordinator and one of the lecturers


Ben Francis-Woodward


Armed with a profound background in aquaculture and fishery management, I possess a BSc (Hons) in Aquaculture and Fishery Management, supplemented by a Foundation Degree in Fishery Science and a National Diploma with Triple Distinction in Aquatics and Ornamental Fish Management. My scholarly pursuits are further enriched by specialised certificates in the Anatomy and Physiology of Fish, Diseases and Pathogens of Fish, and an OATA certificate in Fish Biology.


My dedication and expertise were duly recognised when I was awarded the prestigious 2004 Rolfe C Hagen Glass Rose Dish for exemplary performance in Fish Science at Sparsholt College's Centre of Excellence. My expertise and insights have been shared through contributions to esteemed publications such as Tropical Fish Magazine, Private Air, Russian UK, Practical Fishkeeping, Marine Habitat Magazine (as a member of the expert panel), and Marine World Magazine.


Beyond the realm of publishing, my specialist knowledge in ornamental fish affairs has been recognised by the BBC, leading to appearances on BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 4's Gardeners' Question Time, BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Southern Counties, BBC Radio Kent, and BBC Radio Cumbria. My advisory roles extend to the distinguished corridors of the House of Lords, where I have lectured on our agricultural foreign policy and engaged with world leaders on sustainable aquaculture during a UN meeting focused on African food futures.


Furthermore, my practical experience with fitting out ornamental aquatic shops through my company Universal Aqua Systems based in the UK and many years experience working in aquatic retail in both independent shops and national chains.
